NDP Canada

Leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, Jagmeet Singh is a lawyer, a human rights activist, and a former MPP in Ontario. Jagmeet understands the struggles Canadians are faced with because as a young man, he had to step up and take care of his family.

Recently, Jagmeet and the NDP Caucus delivered the greatest expansion of universal healthcare in generations, with the creation of a new dental care program and concrete steps towards national pharma-care. Jagmeet is driven to make sure government delivers for people with stronger services which help create a better future for everyone.

“I’m ready to fight for you; to make the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share.”

Singh noted that people across Canada are already facing bigger challenges than before. It’s getting harder and harder to find a family supporting job, the climate is in crisis, the housing market is out of reach, and there is a growing need for better seniors’ care and mental health supports.

Throughout the pandemic, Jagmeet Singh and the NDP fought to deliver more for people across Canada. While Justin Trudeau said the right things, he cut pandemic supports for families and seniors who are struggling. Mr. Trudeau failed to deliver on his commitment to get clean drinking water to First Nations, and under his leadership, Canada became the only G7 country whose carbon emissions went up.

“We’re all looking forward to brighter days, but we’re also worried about the future.” said Singh. “After six years of Mr. Trudeau, life isn’t any easier for most of us. The only people who seem to be getting ahead are the billionaires who got richer in the pandemic.

The Cost of Living

New Democrats pledge to raise the amount of untaxed income from $16,129 to $19,500. The party would eliminate GST on essentials (e.g., energy, internet and mobile phone bills). They would keep the proposed increase in the capital gains tax, reinvesting that revenue in universal pharma-care, improving access to health care, national rent control, new housing and a cap on grocery prices. The party would double the amount of the Canada disability benefit and increase the guaranteed income supplement at a combined cost of $3 billion to $4 billion. It wants to open up more $10-a-day child-care spots. We would increase the EI replacement rate to two-thirds of insurable earnings, with a minimum weekly benefit of $450; extend EI benefits to 50 weeks nationwide; implement a national 360-hour standard to qualify for benefits; and remove the one-week waiting period. We would expand pharma-care, dental care and mental health supports for Canadians and ban U.S.-style private health-care clinics.
